Berlin,

At CeBIT today, the Microsoft initiative, “Chancenrepublik Deutschland” [Opportunity Country: Germany] gave the second “Innovate 4 Society Award” for innovative IT solutions. Winner of the competition in the category “Established Company” is the Berlin-based Lesson Nine GmbH, with their online language learning system, babbel.com, and their app for Windows 8.

“Babbel.com offers a great combination of intelligent learning content and digital technology,” said Dr. Christian P. Illek, CEO of Microsoft Germany, at the award ceremony. “Babbel.com’s learning methods take full advantage of the possibilities of apps.”

The Babbel app makes it possible to learn new languages in an entertaining way. All learning content is accompanied by audio, images and text. The combination of reading and listening, writing and matching ensures that the new vocabulary sticks. With the integrated speech recognition tool, users can practice their pronunciation, while an intelligent review manager presents material for review at individually-tailored intervals.

“We’d like to sincerely thank you for the ‘Innovate 4 Society’ award as well as for the collaboration with Microsoft. We look forward to working on more projects together,” said Markus Witte, Managing Director of babbel.com.” As the great response to our Windows 8 app has shown, mobile learning content is proving to be more and more successful. When we learned that we had been nominated for the ‘Innovate 4 Society’ award, we immediately started developing the new Windows 8 Phone app. It is available now, and with it we’ve come one step closer to our vision of mobile, interactive learning.
